Choosing the Right Mix
Match the mix to your soil and how much colour you want in year one.
General Purpose Meadow
Our most popular 80/20 and 90/10 grass and flower mixes suit the widest range of sites and soils. Annuals are included for first-year colour, and robust species establish quickly.
First-Year Colour
Cornfield annuals and the Colour Boost range give a bold show in the first summer — poppies, cornflowers and more. Ideal where there is to be no year-one mowing.
Soil-Specific Mixes
Acid, calcareous and lime-rich, dry loamy or damp lowland soils each have their own species rich mix. Getting this right is the difference between a thin sowing and a full meadow.
Shade & Water Margins
Woodland and heavy shade mixes use shade-tolerant indicator species, while our water margin mix suits pond edges and damp ground with a constant moisture supply.
Establishing a Meadow in 3 Steps
Preparation and first-year management do most of the work.
Prepare the Ground
Clear existing vegetation completely and create a fine, firm, low-nutrient seedbed. Wildflowers compete badly with established grass, so preparation decides the result.
Sow or Lay
Sow seed at around 5g per m² (3–5g per m² for Colour Boost mixes) in spring or autumn, or lay wildflower turf directly onto prepared ground at any suitable time of year.
Manage the First Year
Mixes containing annuals need no first-year mowing. For perennial meadows, cut once or twice in the first year and remove the cuttings to keep nutrient levels low.
