Lawn Care Advice

A good lawn is not hard work, it is the right work at the right time. Here is our complete lawn care guide — what to do each season, and how to feed, water, mow and renovate a lawn properly.

Well maintained green lawn

The Lawn Care Calendar

Four seasons, four different sets of jobs. Work through these in order and the lawn looks after itself.

Spring

March – May

  • First cut of the year on a dry day, blades set high
  • Apply a spring/summer fertiliser as growth starts
  • Treat moss while it is still actively growing
  • Overseed thin or bare patches
  • Service the mower and sharpen the blade

Summer

June – August

  • Raise the cut height in hot, dry spells
  • Water deeply and less often, early morning or evening
  • Feed again if colour fades
  • Spot-treat weeds before they seed
  • Never cut off more than a third of the blade at once

Autumn

September – November

  • Apply an autumn/winter feed after routine maintenance
  • Aerate and scarify to relieve compaction and thatch
  • Overseed and top dress while the soil is still warm
  • Clear fallen leaves every week
  • Keep mowing gently while growth continues

Winter

December – February

  • Stay off frozen or waterlogged grass
  • Keep leaves and debris off the surface
  • Service and store the mower
  • Plan spring feeding, seeding and turfing
  • Order turf, topsoil or seed ready for the new season
